16U Take Ownership of Grizz Cup
A year ago, our 16U team grinded out a 4-3 win in the championship to claim the Grizz Cup. And this year the team looks to defend it.
With a great selection of teams from California, Wyoming, Montana and even Canada they were going to be put to the test. Starting off with Team Wyoming, the team took some time to find their legs. But Talon MacKay netted a goal in the final minute to pull out a 3-2 win. The boys kept the momentum going with a huge 7-3 win against Stouffville Clippers from Canada, where Damian Lowe netted a hat trick. With a 2-0 start on the weekend, the team battled their way to a 2-1 win against Montana Selects with the game winner coming at just 3:43 left in the 3rd by Ryan Ellis. And to finish off the round robin play, our Dawgs took on the San Francisco Sabercats where they popped in 2 goals, and Easton Sargent posted a shutout.
Now 4 and 0, with the 1st seed, the target was on their back. The Stouffville Clippers looked to show them that hockey is still Canada's game. Going down 2-0 in the 1st, the Dawgs had dug themselves into a hole. With a goal from each side in the 2nd period, our Dawgs entered the 3rd down 3 to 1. After a huge 5 on 3 penalty kill, our 16's got buzzin. Netting a power play goal with 5:15 left in the game to cut the deficit to 1. Not long after Jordan Jensen put in the game tying goal with 3:32 left in the game. After a couple incredible chances coming up just short, they headed to overtime. With play going back and forth for both sides, Korbin McKane nets the OT game winner with 30 seconds left to secure the Grizz Cup yet again!
